Journalist Samantha Jameson always wanted to be one of the boys, but Ryan Terell won’t let her join the club. Fresh from the battlegrounds of Iraq, reporting on a bunch of overgrown boys playing pro football is just the change of scenery she needs. If trying to be taken seriously in the world of sports writing wasn’t hard enough, Ryan, her college crush, is only making it harder. As a tight-end for the team she’s covering, he is strictly off limits.
Ryan Terell is a playmaker on and off the field, but when Samantha uncovers his moves, he throws out the playbook. Just as he claims his sweetest victory, Samantha’s investigation into a steroid scandal involving his team forces him to call a time-out to their off the record trysts. But then a life threatening injury on the field will force them both to decide just how far they’ll go to win the game.

Three and a half stars.Playing for Keeps features journalist Samantha Jameson and football player Ryan Terell. They've known each other for ages, and have danced around a mutual attraction for a while. Samantha's freshly returned from some pretty harrowing experiences covering the violence in Iraq, while Ryan's been making a name for himself on the field.
Their circumstances keep them trying to avoid acting on the clear tension between them, and then when they finally cave, keep them from going public with a relationship.
While I do think that some of the story could have used more depth, Playing for Keeps is definitely an enjoyable read, and I'm anxious to pick up the next in the series, about Samantha's roommate Hannah, and one of Ryan's teammates/friends, Jake...

Playing For Keeps Fantasy Football Romance Book 1 eBook Liz Matis Reviews
This was a fun, light read. The romance between Samantha and Ryan was a little predictable but had enough circumstances keeping them apart enough in the beginning so I could root for them getting together. I enjoyed Samantha's character the most, as I think she had the most depth and an interesting background. I thought Ryan was a Neanderthal at first, but I was glad that we got to see his more sensitive sweet side (I really liked him by the end). The secondary romance between Jake and Hannah was fun as well, though that one was obviously not as developed and so I'm happy to see that they get their own book. Overall I enjoyed this story!
The book had great potential but the follow through fell apart. I took away one star for typos because that's a pet peeve of mine (i.e. spelling errors). I had to take away another star for grammar. Lots of errors in tense and using the wrong word such as threw for through. I did like the characters and the plot and it was a nice, light read.
I had this book on my wish list for forever... It went on sale and I missed it then went on sale again.. I grabbed it. I'm mad I waited so long... I loved the main characters! Samantha and Ryan (main couple) then their sidekicks.. Hannah and Jake.. Samantha is a woman of today- professional, works hard in a mostly male profession but makes her way, feisty and not an angel but not crazy either.. She had a fantasy... Ryan.. And for 10 years she fought it and ran from him but he had a fantasy too- Samantha.. Now being back from Iraq and a horrible near death experience out there they both get that second chance to make that fantasy come true.. Not giving any spoilers away- I liked the passion, the way things happened naturally with them as well as Hannah and Jake.. Why this is 4 instead of 5 stars- something misses with the flow or too much is left not addressed. For example the feeling of Ryan not being apart of a family because he was raised in the foster care system when clearly Samantha's family loved him as family... He felt disconnected in that sense and they should have had the opportunity to clear the air with that one. I think he needed that. The case about the drugs... What happened? I would've liked to see how that investigation ended.. I'm definitely looking forward to Jake and Hannah's story.. Good read, great story line..
This is a lighthearted romantic story. I enjoyed reading about Samantha and Ryan. Both characters are amazing, especially Samantha is quite cute and fun-to-know type of character. I loved her. She is a sports writer where as Ryan is an athlete. They're world's apart and yet some how completely perfect for each other. The story was predictable but no less engaging. There were some steamy scenes which made it all the more fun to read.
Samantha had a crush on Ryan but he never payed her any attention or so she thought. Because he was her brother's best friend he always considered her off-limits. Now that they are working together it has become next to impossible to stay away from each other. Even if their affair can potentially ruin Samantha's carrier and not to mention Ryan's chance of being welcomed into Jameson's family, she is willing to take a chance.... but what Samantha doesn't know is that Ryan will be "playing for keeps".
I loved this story. The writing was so good, and I totally loved the whole premise of the story. I thought that Ryan and Samantha had really great chemistry, right from the start. I think they both needed that someone special who could relate to the kind of hurt and pain they were both dealing with. It's like they just knew what the other one was going through, without even having to say the words out loud.
I loved Ryan because he was so quirky and fun, but sometimes I felt so sad for him, too. He basically grew up all alone....living in one Foster care home after another, and even now....after becoming a rich famous NFL football player, he still feels like he's not good enough for anyone. Made me want to reach out and hug him. And I also felt bad for Samantha, too. Suffering from PTDS is a horrrible way for one to have to live their lives. I can't even begin to imagine how one would cope with what she went through, and in a country that has no respect what-so-ever for women, much less a foreign one. I do wish the author would've delved into that topic a little more.
I also loved Samantha's roomate, Hannah. She was so upbeat and fun, and really.....who wouldn't love to have a friend like her. And of course I got a real big kick out of Samatha's family. Coming from a huge and very loud and opinionated Polish family myself; I could totally relate to that Sunday dinner scene. Just too funny!!!
Can't wait to read more by this author!
