Wealthy but ornery spinster is found dead in her home following a spat with her niece, one of the two heirs to her fortune. With the police convinced the niece had done it, but having insufficient proof to arrest her, the family counselor hires Master Detective Fleming Stone to gather evidence which will show someone else committed the crime or, at least, show that there is some reason why the niece could not be tried for it.
I enjoy the mysteries of Ms. Wells even though her plotting lacks the complexity of the British and American Masters (and Mistresses) and the style is more suitable to the light magazines of the day than to the pages of the books to be turned out by 'Philo Vance",
Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. Of course, the social world in which her characters live is usually of the Upper or Upper Middle Class level of society not for her the grim urban streets and tough talking detectives. In this early mystery by her, I was surprised to find that the Master Detective loses his heart to the primary suspect will she reciprocate? Read it to see.
Certainly this is a natural for any fan of the "cozy" mystery. Other readers not committed to "conspiracy theories", tough talking and karate trained young women, foul language and sex on every other page, or deeply psychological analysis, are also likely to find pleasure in this book.
I recently discovered Resurrected Press books, which is a dream come true for me, as I can't get enough of old mystery books! I had never heard of Carolyn Wells before and now I'm sorry I missed out on her novels all this time! To me, a mystery is a winner when I get more than halfway through before I guess whodunit and all most to the end before I figure out why, and how it came about keeps me guessing until the end! So this one gets the gold medal!
On second thought I'm not sorry I didn't discover the author sooner, because now I have all her other books to look forward to!
